Why womens clothes button from the left

One of the many benefits of working in the business apparel industry is having the opportunity of developing relationships with associates in like-minded organisations.
One such association we enjoy is with Suit The City – a fantastic company who offer an exclusive personal service providing exquisite made-to-measure suits, separates and accessories for men and women.
A little piece of trivia from them that caught my eye this week is  … why women’s clothes button from the left, while men’s button from the right?

Around 90% of the world’s population is right-handed and it is easier for right handers to button shirts, so why the difference?

Harry Judd - Suit The City

When buttons first appeared in the 17th century, they were seen only on garments of the wealthy.  At this time it was custom for rich men to dress themselves, and for women to be dressed by servants.
Therefore having women’s shirts button from the left made it easier for the mostly right-handed servants who dressed them.
Men not only dressed themselves, but when they drew their sword from their left hip, it was less likely to get caught in their shirt.
